Last Friday we had a wonderful time at the zoo Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich. It’s a neat place to spend a fun-packed day with amazing species from goats to alligators and you get to learn about the plight of many creatures in the wild – a great leisure time tip, especially on a sunny day.
I met with Franzi and Andi, a lovely couple from Munich that was really looking forward to a fun date at the zoo. And as it turned out, these two are real animal lovers who attracted lots of attention, as you will see in our little photo story below .
As most of the visitors, we started out at the pets corner where you get to feed the cutest goats ever. As soon as we stepped into the zoo exhibit, all the goats suddenly ran towards us. First, we did not know what it was, but as it turned out, we drew lots of attention with our Bahlsen cookies. I guess, the goats were tired of their old, traditional food and smelled these delicious goodies in our handbags. But, of course we did not give them any of the cookies, since they would have made them pretty sick to their stomach. Make sure to only feed them with the grains you can buy directly at the zoo. Otherwise, the goats will get very ill or might even die. However, it was hilarious to play around and to enjoy a spontaneous little cookie break.
Aftwerwards we decided to follow the circular route to make sure we would not miss anything. The weather was amazing: blue sky, only a few clouds and lots of sunshine. Thus, you got to experience pretty awesome light reflections – sort of a 7th heaven for any photographer.
The atmosphere was definitely somewhat romantic and it was like a lovers’ stroll through a huge park. For me as a photographer, it was the perfect setting. One highlight was the new giraffe enclosure complex: these animals are so incredibly beautiful. Although generally quiet and non-vocal, giraffes have been heard to make various sounds. Courting males will emit loud coughs. Females will call their young by whistling or bellowing. Calves will bleat, moo, or make mewing sounds. In addition, giraffes will grunt, snort, hiss, or make strange flute-like sounds.
A second highlight was our short visit at the elephants’. Unfortunately, they were just escorted inside so that we could not watch them for long. I cannot really explain it, but it’s always a magical encounter with them. They immediately cast a spell over you and you could just sit there for hours to actually watch them.
Speaking of magical encounters, we spent most of the time at the monkey house. These creatures are just hilarious: whether it’s crazy orangutans playing games, posing chimpanzees or funny lemurs, you never get bored.
All in all, it was a wonderful day. You always learn something new about the creatures of wildlife and get to cherish the gift of nature – definitely a perfect romantic afternoon at the zoo.
